Making Self Assessment Easier for you

Making Self Assessment Easier for you

Mr P was a retired architect who had been completing his own tax return in recent years. He decided to instruct Gibbons Mannington & Phipps LLP to prepare these on his behalf going forward to ensure that they would be completed correctly, as the rigours of self assessment and online filing had become too much for him.

He provided us with a copy of his 2012/13 return which he had completed himself and engaged us to prepare the 2013/14 tax return on his behalf. On review of Mr P's 2012/13 tax return we noticed that the return made by Mr P for the year declared the exempt capital element of a purchased life annuity in error. Having identified the error we reviewed Mr P's subsequent years returns and he had made the same error on his returns for the year ended 2009/10 through to 2012/13.

We formally wrote to H M Revenue & Customs and claimed overpayment relief for the tax years to 5 April 2010, 2011 and 2012 and filed and an amendment to his 2012/13 return.

Mr P received a refund from H M Revenue & Customs in excess of £2,500. He has peace of mind that his returns will be completed correctly going forward but also that his previous returns have been amended and are now correct.
