How to Sign Up to Making Tax Digital

HMRC announced in July 2020 that all VAT-registered businesses – regardless of income - must file digitally through Making Tax Digital (MTD) as of April 2022. All businesses with a turnover of above £85,000 should already be filing through MTD.

What is Making Tax Digital?

MTD is one of the new processes HMRC is introducing to completely digitalise the UK's tax system. MTD makes filing taxes effective, efficient and simpler for VAT-registered businesses. It is essential taxpayers keep digital financial records to make processing returns easier and accurate.

How to Sign Up for MTD

All businesses regardless of income must be signed up to MTD by 1^st April 2022. To do this:

1. Visit UK and choose Making Tax Digital-compatible software
2. Keep accurate digital records of finances from 1^st April 2022
3. Visit https://www.gov.uk/vat-record-keeping/sign-up-for-making-tax-digital-for-vat and scroll to 'Sign up now' at the bottom of the page

In order to sign up, you need:

• Business email address
• Government Gateway logins
• VAT registration number
• Latest VAT return
• National Insurance number (sole traders)
• Company registration number and Unique Taxpayer Reference (limited companies or registered societies)
• Unique Taxpayer Reference and registered Self Assessment postcode (general partnerships)
• Unique Taxpayer Reference, company registration number and registered Self Assesment postcode (limited partnerships)
